In the latest episode of our podcast, we dive deep into the world of speech and occupational therapy with two incredible experts, Brittany Payne and Melissa McDonough from Nature Speakz. This episode is a must-listen for parents navigating the complexities of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and seeking innovative ways to support their children's development.
Brittany, a speech language pathologist, and Melissa, an occupational therapist, explore the powerful benefits of co-treatment. They emphasize how collaborative efforts between speech and OT can significantly enhance a child's learning experience. For instance, when both professionals work together, they can address a child's sensory needs while simultaneously supporting their communication skills. As Brittany points out, “Regulation always comes first, and we can’t access communication without regulation.” This holistic approach allows for a more tailored and effective therapy experience.
One of the most exciting aspects of this episode is the introduction of Nature Speakz, a nonprofit organization founded by Brittany and Melissa. Their mission is to provide children with outdoor therapy experiences that promote social skills and emotional regulation. The duo explains how nature can be a transformative environment for children, allowing them to thrive and engage more fully in their learning processes. As they discuss, “Nature is where kids thrive, and they can access their communication a lot better when they’re outdoors.”
Listeners will also learn about the importance of collaboration among service providers. Brittany and Melissa share their experiences working in both public and non-public school settings, highlighting the challenges and advantages of each. They discuss how co-treating can provide children with more comprehensive support, allowing them to meet their goals more effectively. They also touch on the significance of communication between therapists and parents, ensuring that everyone is on the same page regarding a child's needs.
The episode also covers essential topics such as feeding therapy, early intervention services, and the role of regional centers in supporting families. With the wealth of knowledge Brittany and Melissa bring, parents will feel empowered to advocate for their children and explore various therapeutic options available in their communities.
